Translated by J. S. (Jacob Samuel) Speyer
The Jataka tales are stories of the Buddha's previous lives, told in Sanskrit verse and prose around the first century CE. In them, the Bodhisattva moves through countless incarnations: king and beggar, god and animal, scholar and sage. Each story illuminates a different facet of the path to enlightenment, but they all orbit a single truth: that compassion is the highest law of the universe. The collection opens with one of Buddhism's most arresting images: the Bodhisattva, wandering in the forest, encounters a starving tigress about to devour her own cubs. What follows is a meditation on self-sacrifice so radical it bends the limits of the genre. These aren't mere fables. They are maps of the soul, showing how the Buddha earned his enlightenment through lives lived in service to others. For readers seeking ancient wisdom that still cuts clean to the bone, this is it.
