The Fugitive Blacksmith: Or, Events in the History of James W. C. Pennington, Pastor of a Presbyterian Church, New York, Formerly a Slave in the State of Maryland, United States
1849
One of the most remarkable voices from the antebellum era, James W. C. Pennington escaped slavery in Maryland to become a Presbyterian pastor in New York, and one of the most powerful abolitionist orators of his generation. His 1849 narrative stands as both a searing indictment of slavery's so-called "mild" forms and an intimate portrait of one man's relentless pursuit of freedom and selfhood. Born into bondage, Pennington endured the systematic degradation of the chattel system before his daring escape north. But freedom brought its own battles, Pennington had to fight for his identity, his education, and his place in a society that questioned whether a Black man could be a pastor, a scholar, a full human being. His account doesn't merely document the horrors of enslavement; it traces the agonizing construction of a self in resistance to forces that tried to annihilate it. Pennington wrote to shatter comfortable illusions: there is no mild form of slavery, only varying degrees of brutality inflicted on people the law deemed property. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how enslaved people preserved their humanity and demanded recognition as persons, not property.
