The French Revolution 1789-1795

France explodes. In 1789, the most powerful monarchy in Europe fractures beneath the weight of its own contradictions, and the world watches as peasants storm the Bastille, aristocrats lose their heads, and Enlightenment ideals collide with brutal reality. Bertha Meriton Gardiner's 1887 account traces this transformation with Victorian precision, examining the aristocratic privileges that strangled France, the intellectual ferment of Voltaire and Rousseau that seeded rebellion, and the cascading events from the meeting of the Estates-General to the blood-soaked Terror. What makes this account endure is not merely its thoroughness, but its historical proximity to an event that still haunts our understanding of revolution, liberty, and the cost of change. Gardiner writes as one for whom the Revolution's reverberations remain vivid, bringing a moral urgency and narrative gravity that modern academic histories often lack. This is history written when the shadows of the guillotine still lengthened across European politics.
