The Fox Jumps over the Parson's Gate

This is the book that almost invented the modern picture book. Randolph Caldecott, the man whose name now graces the most prestigious American illustration award, burst onto the Victorian children's book scene with works like this: a dizzy, glorious celebration of rural English life rendered in pen, ink, and watercolors that practically leap off the page. The story is simple enough. A huntsman blows his horn. A fox jumps the parson's gate while the hounds give chase. Meanwhile, the parson has a pair of lovers to wed. But the words are almost beside the point. What Caldecott understood, and what he gave to children's literature forever, is that pictures could do more than illustrate. They could narrate. They could joke. They could dance. His figures twist and turn with an energy that must have seemed miraculous in 1883, full of kindly, wry humor that still charms. This is Caldecott at his formative best, before he became the legend, when he was still inventing the form. Perfect for very young readers encountering their first picture book, or for anyone curious about where illustration began.
