The Former Philippines Thru Foreign Eyes

A rare window into 19th-century Philippines through the eyes of travelers and observers unconnected to Spanish colonial power. These foreign accounts, collected and contextualized by editor Austin Craig, reveal a society caught between indigenous traditions and colonial impositions, showing Filipino life, trade, and customs with an outsider's mixture of fascination and limitation. The compilation directly challenges Spanish narratives that diminished Filipino capabilities, offering instead unfiltered perspectives from those who observed the archipelago's geography, social structures, and daily life during Spanish rule. These documents preserve observations that might otherwise have been lost to history, providing modern readers with invaluable primary sources about a nation and people often misrepresented in colonial records. For historians, researchers, and anyone interested in Philippine history or colonial studies, this compilation serves as a vital counterweight to traditional accounts.
