The Flag Replaced on Sumter: A Personal Narrative

Spicer writes from inside history, and it shows. This is not a distant chronicle but a soldier's raw account of watching the nation tear itself apart and slowly, painfully, stitch itself back together. He takes us to Fort Sumter in those final days before the first shots cracked across Charleston Harbor, introduces us to Major Anderson and the doomed garrison, and traces the political powder keg that South Carolina's governor Francis Pickens had become. The book builds toward its emotional climax with the return of the American flag in April 1865, when the Union finally reclaimed the fort in a ceremony thick with tears, brass bands, and the exhausted relief of a war nearly won. Spicer doesn't prettify the patriotism or the grief; he simply records what he saw, and what he saw was a nation learning whether it could survive its own contradiction. For Civil War historians and anyone drawn to primary sources that capture the human scale of seismic events.
