The Fairy Changeling and Other Poems

In the mist-shrouded hills of late Victorian Ireland, Dora Sigerson Shorter found words for what haunts us. This collection pulses with the old magic: changeling children stolen by the fair folk, lovers lost to death and time, grief given shape in spectral form. Shorter writes with a Gothic sensibility that feels less like nostalgia than revelation, as if the boundary between the living and the otherworldly were merely a membrane she could press through with the right phrase. Her speakers encounter love that transcends mortality, loss that takes on physical form, and nature alive with ancient intelligence. These are poems of the borderlands, where the rational world thins and something older emerges. Shorter was a central figure in the Irish Literary Revival, and her work carries the peculiar ache of a culture looking backward to save what modernity threatened to erase. For readers who crave poetry that feels like standing at a threshold, this collection offers both chill and warmth: the chill of the unknown, the warmth of being understood by someone who speaks from within the mystery.
