The Facts of Reconstruction

In 1913, as Jim Crow solidified its grip and the 'Lost Cause' mythology consumed Southern memory, a man who had actually lived through Reconstruction sat down to write his account. John Roy Lynch was twenty-six years old when he entered the U.S. Congress as a representative from Mississippi, one of the first Black legislators to serve in the post-Civil War South. Now, decades later, he watches history being rewritten before his eyes, and he has the documents, the dates, and the experience to fight back. The Facts of Reconstruction is not a memoir of personal suffering or a abstract treatise. It is a meticulous, fact-driven rebuttal to the growing chorus of Southern apologists who blamed Reconstruction for every ill of the New South. Lynch systematically dismantles the myth that Black governance was a failure, presenting evidence from election returns, congressional records, and his own frontline experience in Mississippi politics. He details the struggle between Congress and President Johnson, the formation of new state governments, and the relentless push to enfranchise freedmen against fierce opposition. What makes this book extraordinary is its author: a man born into slavery who helped build the Republican Party in Mississippi, who faced down violence and fraud to cast his vote and cast it again. This is the Reconstruction as seen by someone who was there, who succeeded, and who watched that success being torched by the very nation that built it. For anyone seeking to understand how we got from emancipation to Jim Crow, this is an essential correction.
