The Expositor's Bible: The Song of Solomon and the Lamentations of Jeremiah

Two of the Bible's most surprising books meet their match in this luminous Victorian commentary. The Song of Solomon explodes the myth that ancient religious texts lack sensuality: these are poems of aching desire, radiant beauty, and fierce loyalty, centered on a shepherd girl who chooses simple love over royal opulence. Adeney guides readers through the poem's intricate structure and the interpretive puzzles that have baffled scholars for centuries. Then comes the stark reversal: Lamentations, where Jeremiah weeps over the ruins of Jerusalem in elegies so raw they feel modern, poems where grief becomes a form of prayer. Adeney treats both texts with scholarly rigor but never loses sight of their emotional power. This is commentary that takes poetry seriously, revealing how these ancient voices still speak to experiences of love, longing, and loss that feel utterly contemporary.
