The Expedition of the Donner Party and Its Tragic Fate

In the summer of 1846, George Donner led his family and dozens of other pioneers toward California on a promises of new beginnings. By winter, they were trapped in the Sierra Nevada, buried under impossible snow, starving. What happened next became America's most infamous frontier tragedy. Eliza Donner was four years old. She survived. Decades later, she set down what she remembered: the excitement of crossing the prairies, the terror of that long winter, and what it meant to grow up as the daughter of a man whose name became synonymous with desperation and survival at any cost. This is not distant history but lived memory, a child's impressions sharpened by her sisters' recollections and her own troubled years afterward. It is both intimate testimony and invaluable document, giving human scale to a legend that has long since hardened into cautionary tale.
