The Evolution of Sinn Fein

In 1920, as Ireland burned with the fire of independence, Robert Mitchell Henry composed this urgent history of the movement that promised to finally break Britain's grip on the island. Written in the heat of the Anglo-Irish War, The Evolution of Sinn Fein offers something rare: a contemporary account of how a political society born in 1905 transformed into the vanguard of Irish nationalism. Henry traces the lineage from the Act of Union's cruel aftermath through the Famine's devastation to the faltering failures of Parnell and earlier nationalist movements, showing how decades of broken promises and calculated betrayals forged the conditions for Sinn Fein's emergence. This is not neutral scholarship but a work written by a man who believed deeply in the cause, a historian watching history unfold and determined to record its making. For readers seeking to understand the intellectual origins of Irish independence, the ideological battles within nationalism, and the precise moment when peaceful political resistance gave way to something more radical, Henry's account remains an indispensable window into a nation's awakening. Its value lies not in retrospective analysis but in its raw immediacy: here is how the revolution saw itself, even as it was being fought.
