The Evolution of Naval Armament

A Royal Navy engineer commander writes from inside the machine that built the world's most powerful fleet. Robertson traces the transformation of naval warfare across the nineteenth century, when wooden sailing ships gave way to ironclad behemoths powered by steam, and when naval guns evolved from smoothbore cannons to precision artillery capable of sinking battleships. This is not a chronicle of battles or admirals, but a careful engineering history of how ships were designed, armed, and propelled and why Britain nearly lost its naval supremacy through stubborn refusal to embrace new technologies. Robertson witnessed these developments firsthand and brings technical authority to questions that shaped empire and war: How do you armor a ship against shells that can penetrate eighteen inches of iron? What happens when sail gives way to coal? The book illuminates the invisible arms race between shipbuilders and gun designers, the industrial might behind naval power, and the costly lessons learned only after catastrophic blunders at sea. For readers fascinated by military technology, the rise of modern navies, or the engineering foundations of imperial power.
