The Eve of the French Revolution

The eve of revolution is always a tense place to stand. Edward J. Lowell's landmark study captures France in the decades before 1789 as a society poisoning itself with contradictions. The monarchy had grown indolent and bankrupt. The clergy had become worldly while preaching otherworldliness. And everywhere, the writings of Voltaire, Rousseau, and their ilk were spreading like wildfire through salons and cafes, planting dangerous ideas in fertile ground. Lowell traces the specific failures that made revolution inevitable: the financial collapse of the French state, the growing insolence of the nobility, the awakening political consciousness of the bourgeoisie, and the desperate half-measures of Louis XVI that satisfied no one. This is social history at its most vivid, painting the Old Regime not as a static relic but as a crumbling edifice everyone could see was falling. For anyone who wants to understand how a great nation sleepwalked toward catastrophe, this remains essential reading over a century later.
