The Essenes: Their History and Doctrines

Long before the Dead Sea Scrolls captured the world's imagination, one Victorian scholar attempted to reconstruct a vanished Jewish sect that bordered on myth. Christian D. Ginsburg's 1864 study ventures into the mysterious world of the Essenes, the ascetic community that shared Jerusalem's hills with the Pharisees and Sadducees but chose radical separation: communal property, rejection of oaths, strict Levitical purity, and a spiritual life so devoted to meditation that they banned the study of logic and metaphysics as dangerous to devotion.
