The English Provincial Printers, Stationers and Bookbinders to 1557

Before London dominated the world of print, a network of provincial workshops produced the books that fed England's growing hunger for literacy and faith. This pioneering study reconstructs that lost world: the printers of Oxford, Cambridge, Ipswich, Worcester, Canterbury, and beyond, who worked in the turbulent decades before 1557 when religious upheaval and economic uncertainty shaped every page they pressed. E. Gordon Duff undertook something radical for his era - he looked beyond the great London presses to trace the humble workshops where individual craftsmen shaped a culture of reading. The result is both a work of recovery and a meditation on what gets remembered. Duff resurrects the names and careers of provincial printers whose contributions have been overshadowed by history, mapping the geography of early English printing with scholarly precision. A foundational work that remains essential for anyone interested in the material history of the Tudor period.
