The Emeryville Shellmound
1907

Max Uhle's 1907 excavation report stands as the definitive archaeological record of a place that no longer exists. The Emeryville Shellmound was once the largest of over 425 shellmounds ringing San Francisco Bay, a sacred burial ground and centuries-old settlement of the Ohlone people, towering thirty-five feet high at its apex. Working with Professor John C. Merriam, Uhle meticulously documented the mound's stratigraphy, burial practices, and tens of thousands of artifacts: bone tools, stone implements, obsidian blades, and the accumulated refuse of daily life stretching back millennia. What emerges is not merely a catalog of objects but a vivid portrait of a sophisticated coastal people who harvested the bay's riches, maintained complex social structures, and interred their dead with remarkable care. The text carries an undertone of urgency, the shellmounds were already disappearing under industrial development even as Uhle wrote. Today, with the site obliterated entirely, this document becomes something more than archaeology: it is an irreplaceable testament to a civilization that shaped the Bay Area for thousands of years before colonization.
