The Egyptian Campaigns, 1882 to 1885

In the early 1880s, Egypt stood at the precipice. Decades of financial mismanagement under Khedive Ismail had left the country drowning in debt to European creditors, while nationalist fury against foreign interference simmered among Egyptian officers and citizens alike. This contemporary account, written by Charles Royle who lived through these turbulent years, chronicles the British military intervention that would reshape the region for generations. From the dramatic bombardment of Alexandria to the decisive Battle of Tel el-Kebir, and the harrowing campaigns against the Mahdist uprising in Sudan, Royle provides vivid firsthand detail of campaigns that marked Britain's formal entry into Egyptian affairs. He traces the financial collapse that made intervention inevitable, introduces the key players from Arabi Pasha's nationalist rebellion to the Mahdi's religious crusade, and examines the political machinations that drove imperial expansion. The result is an invaluable primary source for understanding how a temporary military operation became a decades-long occupation, and why Egypt's relationship with Britain remains complex to this day. For readers drawn to imperial history, military strategy, or the tangled origins of modern Middle Eastern politics, this book offers a window into a moment when the Ottoman Empire's weakest province became the centerpiece of British strategic ambitions.
