The Doings of the Fifteenth Infantry Brigade: August 1914 to March 1915

August 1914: Europe teeters on the edge of war, and a British brigade commander writes home about his men. Edward, Lord Gleichen was no distant general observing from headquarters - he lived among his officers, shared their mess, and led them into the unknown. This memoir captures the Fifteenth Infantry Brigade in those extraordinary first months: the confusion of mobilization, the scramble to reach France, the strange mixture of order and chaos that characterized the British Expeditionary Force at its inception. Gleichen introduces us to the men who carried the burden - not as statistics or units, but as individuals with quirks, courage, and mounting anxiety. We see the machinery of war failing and adapting in real time: supplies misdirected, timetables in disarray, yet somehow the brigade holds together. There is no事后 hindsight here, no knowledge of the slaughter to come. What radiates from every page is the grim determination of professional soldiers doing their duty, and the peculiar camaraderie of men who know they are entering something unprecedented. For anyone seeking to understand WWI from the inside - not through statistics but through the voice of a man who was there - this is essential reading.
