The Doctor in History, Literature, Folk-Lore, Etc.

Who could have imagined that the man who cut your hair also once bled you for a fever? This captivating Victorian collection resurrects the forgotten world of medical practitioners across centuries, from the bloodletting barber-surgeons of medieval Europe to the royal physicians whose remedies sound like spells. Andrews and his contributors weave through history, literature, and folk tradition to reveal how our ancestors understood disease, healing, and the body. You'll encounter ancient surgical techniques that would make modern doctors wince,药材 remedies that blur the line between medicine and magic, and the slow, often bizarre professionalization of a field that once counted barbers, monks, and charlatans among its ranks. The book illuminates not merely how medicine changed, but why society trusted these particular healers with such power. For anyone curious about the strange, stumbling path from superstition to science, this remains a delightful cabinet of medical curiosities.
