The Diplomatic Correspondence of the American Revolution, Vol. 03

The actual letters that won a revolution. This volume gathers the diplomatic correspondence of Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay during the American Revolutionary War - not the mythologized founders of history textbooks, but real men in desperate circumstances, writing letters that might determine whether their nation would survive. The correspondence opens with Franklin's arrival in France, his establishment as a commissioner at the French court, and the delicate dance of securing military supplies and formal alliances. Here you will find the hope and the anxiety, the careful flattery and the quiet warnings, as American diplomats navigated European courts while their army bled at home. These pages reveal the precarious position of the American cause in 1776 and 1777: a young republic begging for recognition, promising trade concessions, seeking arms and armies, fully aware that France and Spain had their own ambitions and could abandon the experiment at any moment. For anyone who wants to understand how American independence was actually achieved - through diplomacy as much as warfare - these unfiltered primary sources offer an indispensable window into the revolutionary moment.
