The Diary of a Girl in France in 1821

Fourteen-year-old Mary Browne crosses the Channel in 1821, and everything changes. From the crowded streets of London before departure to the bewildering landscapes of France, her diary captures the electricity of encountering the unfamiliar through eyes that have never left home before. She grapples with strange customs, feels the ache of homesickness, and records it all with a teenager's disarming honesty and wonder. What emerges is neither a polished travelogue nor a historical treatise, but something rarer: the unfiltered voice of a young girl making sense of a world that suddenly feels vast and strange. The diary documents the small moments that matter to an adolescent heart, new foods, foreign languages, the loneliness of being the outsider, alongside her witnessing of a France still fresh from revolution. This is history rendered intimate, filtered through the particular blindness and clarity of youth.
