The Descent of the Sun: A Cycle of Birth

There is something unsettling and beautiful about a Victorian Englishman pretending to translate ancient Hindu myths. Francis William Bain claimed to have found this tale in a Sanskrit manuscript; scholars long suspected he invented it entirely. The debate has faded, but the spell remains. The story follows Kamalamitra, a spirit-king so consumed by devotion that he performs severe penance for a wife of transcendent beauty. He finds Anushayiní beside a lotus pond, and their love should be eternal. But in a moment of pride, they challenge a sage to test her allure, and the sage's curse binds them to an agonizing cycle: separation until one slays the other. The Descent of the Sun moves through reincarnation and rebirth, through desire and its consequences, with the strange logic of myth. It reads like a fairy tale told in a dream, strange and precise. Whether authentic ancient text or elaborate Victorian fiction, it captures something true about love's terrible hunger and the cost of beauty that dares to challenge the divine.
