The defender

In the remote Siberian mountains, a lonely shepherd named Turgen finds unlikely companionship among a herd of wild mountain rams. The villagers ostracize him, whispering that he must be a sorcerer to have earned the animals' trust. When hunters arrive with rifles and profit in their eyes, Turgen faces an impossible choice: stay silent and safe, or risk everything to protect creatures who have given him their faith. A widowed mother and her children, themselves outsiders in the village, become his secret allies in this quiet battle between humanity and the wild. First published in 1951 and winner of a Newbery Honor, this is the kind of story that stays with you, not for its action, but for its quiet testament to what it means to stand alone for something right.
