The Day of Sir John Macdonald: A Chronicle of the First Prime Minister of the Dominion

This is a first-hand account of Canada's founding father, written by the man who knew him best. Sir Joseph Pope served as John A. Macdonald's private secretary during the most consequential years of Canadian nationhood, and in this chronicle he draws on intimate knowledge to paint a portrait of the ambitious Scottish immigrant who would become the Dominion's first Prime Minister. The narrative traces Macdonald's journey from his childhood in Glasgow to his family's migration to Kingston, Ontario, where the young lawyer first entered politics amid the turbulence of a province still grappling with the aftermath of the War of 1812. Pope illuminates the political machinations, patronage battles, and visionary infrastructure projects that defined Macdonald's ascent, including the railway that would bind the vast young nation together. This is not impersonal history but rather a meditation on power, legacy, and the costs of building a country, from the perspective of a man who witnessed it all from the inner circle. For readers interested in Canadian political history, the roots of Confederation, or the complicated figures who shape nations, this early 20th-century biography offers unparalleled insider access to the origins of modern Canada.
