The Danube from the Black Forest to the Black Sea

In 1876, American artist Francis Davis Millet climbed into a canoe at the Danube's source in the German Black Forest and began an extraordinary descent toward the Black Sea. What followed was a 1,700-mile odyssey through nine countries, across empires in twilight, past medieval fortresses and bustling market towns, through regions where Ottoman, Habsburg, and Russian powers still jostled for dominance. Millet paddled through rapids and calms, camped on riverbanks, and documented a Europe that would vanish within a generation. This is adventure travel writing in its purest form: a Victorian gentleman encountering the raw, untamed continent, recording its people, its ruins, its birds and flowers, its ancient tensions. The prose carries the confident buoyancy of a man who has never been told the journey is impossible. For readers who love vintage travel narratives, who dream of rivers they can no longer paddle, this book is a time machine to a wilder Danube, when the journey itself was the point.
