The Crisis in Russia

In December 1919, as Russia's devastating civil war showed signs of winding down, Arthur Ransome embedded himself in the collapsing heart of the revolutionary state. What he found was not the triumphant socialist utopia the world expected, but a nation devouring itself. Economic collapse had emptied storehouses and paralyzed factories. Government structures were fragmenting under the strain, while ordinary people struggled for basic survival amid widespread social breakdown. Ransome draws on firsthand observations and leaked documents, including Trotsky's controversial memoranda on industrial conscription, to capture a regime at a crossroads: would the Bolsheviks stabilize their revolution, or collapse under the weight of their own ambitions? This is historical writing as eyewitness testimony, urgent and unflinching, capturing the precise moment when the world's most consequential political experiment teetered between consolidation and catastrophe.
