The Creation of God

A fierce, 19th-century assault on religious belief from the front lines of scientific materialism. Hartmann mounts a passionate argument that the concept of God is a human invention keeping humanity in intellectual chains. Prayer, he contends, is worse than useless; submission to priestly authority is slavish; and the path forward lies in understanding our own bodies, our nervous systems, and the natural laws that govern existence. Consciousness, thought, intellect, he argues, are merely "functions of nervous matter" - nothing more. He calls on humanity to abandon "cringing fear" for sacred authority and comprehend themselves through rational inquiry instead. The book reads as a product of its era yet speaks to enduring questions about faith, reason, and what it means to understand ourselves without the divine. For readers drawn to the history of freethought, the rise of scientific materialism, or the intellectual battles of the 19th century, this is a fascinating artifact from a time when the conflict between science and religion was reaching new intensity.
