The Covenanters of Damascus; A Hitherto Unknown Jewish Sect

In 1898, fragments of extraordinary manuscripts emerged from the storeroom of a Damascus synagogue, revealing a Jewish sect so radical it had vanished from history entirely. George Foot Moore reconstructs the beliefs and practices of the Covenanters, a community that broke from mainstream Judaism to follow their own strict interpretation of divine law, tracing their origins to Israelites who migrated to Damascus and forged a "new covenant" with God. The texts they left behind blend fervent apocalyptic prophecy with meticulous legal codes, demanding total adherence to their vision of purity while denouncing the practices of established Jewish communities as corrupt. Moore examines what these fragments reveal about the sect's history, their conflicts with other Jewish groups, and their place within the religious turbulence of the Seleucid period. The result is a window into a forgotten world of intense theological conviction, where a marginal community believed themselves sole preservers of true faith amid a degenerate age. For scholars and curious readers alike, this remains a foundational study of one of history's most elusive Jewish sects.
