The Cool War

What if the Cold War's most dangerous game required not bullets but bad timing? In this gleefully absurd 1963 spy comedy, Soviet operative Pashkov receives an assignment straight from a kafkaesque nightmare: impersonate American Colonel James, infiltrate the Pentagon, and steal secrets. The catch? He must maintain this charade while the real Colonel James is simultaneously impersonating him in Moscow. As Pashkov navigates botched kidnappings, bureaucrats who take themselves deadly seriously, and the quixotic writer Boris Knackenpast (whose very name sounds like a conspiracy theorist's fever dream), he discovers that espionage is less about glamour and more about paperwork, miscommunication, and praying no one asks too many questions. Fetler skewers the Cold War's absurd machinery with a light touch, showing how easily nations spiral into conflict over misunderstandings and how deeply ironic it is that men on opposite sides share the same anxieties about promotion, approval, and not getting caught. It's a time capsule of early 60s nuclear paranoia, but one that refuses to take itself seriously, delivering instead a sharp, funny portrait of men trapped in roles they never auditioned for.
