The Contemporary Review, Volume 36, December 1879

December 1879: a moment when Victorian England teetered between tradition and transformation. This volume of The Contemporary Review captures that tension in its most vital form. John Ruskin opens the collection with a series of fiery letters to the clergy, challenging them to abandon comfortable platitudes and grapple seriously with the Gospel's demands on their congregations and on society. His argument is not merely theological but political and aesthetic, insisting that true Christian duty cannot be separated from how men live, build, and create together. The surrounding essays extend this urgency into the political sphere, dissecting strategy, empire, and the responsibilities of power. What emerges is a portrait of an intellectual class unwilling to accept easy answers, wrestling with questions about faith in an age of doubt, art in an age of industry, and morality in an age of empire. These are not antiquated disputes. They are the same battles still being fought.
