The Confessions of a Caricaturist, Vol. 2

Harry Furniss spent three years secretly creating an exhibition specifically designed to make fools of the British art establishment. The caricaturist, known for his razor-sharp wit in Punch magazine, crafted an elaborate satirical show parodying the Royal Academy's most pompous tendencies, filling it with works that mocked the styles of famous artists while appearing perfectly serious. The public and critics alike flocked to see what they believed was a legitimate new artistic movement, and Furniss reveled in their bamboozlement until he finally revealed the joke. This volume of his confessions documents that audacious prank and the furor it caused, alongside other autobiographical sketches exploring his life in the cutthroat world of Victorian illustration. What emerges is a portrait of an artist who understood that sometimes the most profound critique comes wrapped in laughter, and that the line between genius and hoax is thinner than the Academy would like to admit. For readers who delight in art world satire, historical pranks, or the cunning ways outsiders have always thumbed their noses at official culture.
