The Colored Inventor: A Record of Fifty Years

Henry E. Baker

Archaeology & Anthropology, Engineering & Technology, History - American, History - Modern (1750+)

At the turn of the twentieth century, Henry E. Baker undertook an urgent task: to preserve a history being systematically erased. In an era when the inventions and achievements of Black Americans were routinely attributed to white men, dismissed, or simply overlooked, Baker compiled this meticulous record of fifty years of Black inventive genius following emancipation. The book documents dozens of inventors whose work shaped American industry. There is Granville T. Woods, the "Black Edison" who patented crucial electrical systems for railways and earned the admiration of Thomas Edison himself. There is Elijah McCoy, whose automatic lubricating cup became so essential to railroads that "the real McCoy" entered the American lexicon. Baker catalogs their patents, their innovations in agriculture and mechanics and electrical engineering, their stubborn refusal to accept a society that told them they did not belong. This book endures because it does what the wider culture would not: it bears witness. For anyone interested in the hidden architecture of American invention, or in the long struggle for recognition that predates our current conversations about diversity and inclusion, Baker's work remains indispensable.
