The Circus Procession

A rare surviving artifact of Victorian picture-book making, this accordion-fold panorama stretches nearly twelve feet when fully extended, inviting children to walk their fingers through a grand circus procession. Each vivid illustration is paired with four lines of verse, creating a rhythmic journey past clowns balancing on horses, an elephant fitted with comical wheels, a king and queen in regal attire, and a fairy queen sprinkling dust across the scene. The text bounces with the momentum of a parade, naming each new wonder in jaunty cadence that would have delighted late 19th-century listeners gathered around a parent or nursery governess. What elevates this beyond mere period piece is its sheer object-hood: the physical act of unfolding the circus, of tracing the procession with one's hand, creates an intimacy with the text that modern picture books rarely achieve. It captures a moment when children's literature was still inventing itself, when the magic of a circus coming to town could be contained in a foldable paper panorama meant to be touched, explored, and stood over. For collectors of children's book history and anyone who remembers the particular thrill of a pop-up or moving book as a child.
