The Church of Grasmere: A History

In the shadow of Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage, where Wordsworth once walked and poets still pilgrimage, stands St. Oswald's Church of Grasmere - a sanctuary whose story has been silently waiting to be told. Mary L. Armitt resurrects a corner of English history that mainstream historians bypassed: a small parish church in the remote Lake District, dedicated to a seventh-century king-turned-saint, that somehow survived centuries of ecclesiastical maneuvering, patronial caprice, and geographical isolation. Armitt traces the church's origins through the early spread of Christianity in the region, follows its tangled relationships with powerful patrons, and documents its eventual absorption under the authority of the Abbey of St. Mary in York. This is local history at its most obsessive and loving - the kind of scholarship that emerges not from ambition but from deep, personal扎根. For readers who understand that empires are built from ten thousand such small places, and that understanding England means understanding its forgotten villages as much as its cathedrals.
