The Church Index: A Book of Metropolitan Churches and Church Enterprise: Part I. Kensington

Kensington in 1872 stood at the threshold of its transformation from village to metropolis, and William Pepperell's meticulous directory captures that pivotal moment. Here are the Anglican parishes and dissenting chapels that served a community in furious growth, their clergy named, their architectural details recorded, their community work catalogued. What emerges is more than a reference work: it's a portrait of how religious institutions anchored identity in a rapidly changing London. Pepperell documents St. Mary Abbotts after its rebuilding, traces the histories embedded in pew and stone, and traces the invisible threads connecting congregation to neighborhood. For historians of Victorian London, this offers granular evidence of how churches functioned as social infrastructure. For anyone walking Kensington's streets today, wondering about the origins of its architectural treasures, this provides the names, dates, and stories that time has obscured.
