The Church: Her Books and Her Sacraments

These lectures, delivered as the prestigious Boyle Lectures in 1910, represent a passionate defense and explanation of the Catholic Church's role in Christian life. E.E. Holmes wrote for a congregation that had the privilege of membership but perhaps not the understanding that privilege demanded. His purpose was twofold: to stir gratitude in those who already belonged to the Church, and to equip them to become teachers themselves. Holmes addresses readers who may attend services regularly yet remain unclear on why the Church exists, what it does, and why it matters. He presents the Church as a universal society founded by Christ, a channel through which salvation flows via its sacraments. The stakes are high: an uninformed laity, he argues, cannot fully live their faith or share it with others. What gives this treatise its warmth is Holmes's conviction that belonging to the Catholic Church is an "underrated privilege." He writes not as a distant theologian but as a shepherd who wants his flock to recognize what they have. For readers interested in early 20th-century religious thought, Anglican-Catholic dialogue, or the intellectual foundations of faith, this book offers a window into how one clergyman sought to make doctrine live and breathe.
