The Christian Foundation, or, Scientific and Religious Journal, April, 1880

In the spring of 1880, the debate between science and faith had never been more urgent. This journal captures a moment when Darwin's evolutionary theory was still fresh, still stinging, still reshaping every assumption about humanity's place in the cosmos. Written by Victorian scholars wrestling with the collision of new scientific rationalism and ancient Christian conviction, these pages mount a vigorous defense of spiritual truth against the rising tide of materialism. The arguments here are earnest and rigorous: reflections on design in nature, refutations of atheism, examinations of how Christian civilization uplifted humanity above mere animal existence. What emerges is not mere polemic but a genuine intellectual struggle, a window into thoughtful men and women refusing to abandon their worldview while staring directly into the face of modern science. For readers interested in the history of ideas, this journal offers something rare: the authentic voice of 19th-century faith under siege, neither dismissive of science nor willing to surrender doctrine. It is a time capsule of the great debate that still echoes today.
