The Catholic World, Vol. 25, April 1877 to September 1877

A vivid window into the intellectual life of late 19th-century American Catholicism, this volume of The Catholic World pulses with the era's anxieties and curiosities. The opening essay on Nagualism, Voodooism, and Crypto-Paganism in the United States reveals a Victorian fascination with the persistence of "forbidden" faiths: how enslaved Africans and Native Americans quietly maintained spiritual traditions that Christianity could not wholly extinguish. This is not mere anthropological curiosity, but a serious theological reckoning with the resilience of the human soul's ancient hunger for the sacred. The volume then unfolds through poetry, scientific commentary, historical essays, and cultural critique, reflecting a faith tradition attempting to navigate modernity, pluralism, and the expanding boundaries of the American experiment. The writing carries the confidence of an establishment grappling, sometimes clumsily, with the limits of its own certainty. For readers interested in the history of American religion, the evolution of Catholic intellectual culture, or the long shadows cast by colonial encounters, this volume offers an unfiltered encounter with how our great-grandparents understood the spiritual battles of their age.
