The Catholic World, Vol. 14, October 1871-March 1872a Monthly Magazine of General Literature and Science

A monthly magazine of general literature and science written in the late 19th century. This volume offers a diverse array of articles, essays, and poetry that reflect the Catholic perspective on various contemporary issues, societal debates, and religious discussions of the time. The opening of this publication features a critical essay titled ''Christianity and Positivism,'' which discusses the shortcomings of a series of lectures given by Dr. James McCosh, who addresses the perceived conflict between Christianity and the Positivist philosophy. The essay critiques McCosh's arguments, emphasizing the need for a solid Catholic foundation in dialogue with Positivism, and presents a comprehensive analysis of key philosophical concepts such as natural theology and the existence of God. The discourse highlights contrasting views on faith and reason, ultimately advocating for Catholic teachings as a defense against growing secular ideologies.
