The Camp-Life of the Third Regiment

A chaplain's intimate chronicle of the Third Missouri Volunteers at Camp Alger, where the rhythms of military life unfold in vivid detail. Robert Thomas Kerlin, serving as their spiritual guide, captures what newspapers of the day could not: the texture of dawn drills, the particular boredom between battles, the jokes that passed between men who knew why they had enlisted. His account, drawn from letters originally published for a civilian readership, preserves something precious and fragile: the daily humanity of soldiers far from home. The book chronicles not merely routines and duties but the invisible bonds that form when men share hardship. Kerlin writes with the affection of one who preached to these men, marched with them, and witnessed their courage without romanticizing it. The result is a window into late 19th-century American military experience that feels remarkably immediate, revealing the good humor and stubborn dignity that sustained soldiers through camp life and whatever lay beyond it.
