The Brochure Series of Architectural Illustration, Vol. 01, No. 01, January 1895: The Gothic Palaces of Venice

A rare artifact of late 19th-century architectural scholarship, this 1895 brochure series inaugural issue documents the Gothic palaces of Venice with meticulous precision. The text examines landmark structures including the Ducal Palace and the delicate Palazzo Contarini Fasan, offering detailed analysis of facades, window tracery, and the distinctive decorative motifs that define Venetian Gothic architecture. Written for architects, students, and design enthusiasts of the period, it traces how Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance influences converged in this singular city built upon water, revealing why Venice became a laboratory for architectural adaptation. The observations preserved here capture these centuries-old structures at a moment when they were being newly appreciated and systematically studied. For anyone who has stood before a Venetian facade and wondered at the hands that built it, this historical document offers both technical insight and a remarkable window into Victorian-era design appreciation.
