The Boys' Life of Abraham Lincoln

This 1906 biography captures Abraham Lincoln before he became the Great Emancipator - as a hungry, awkward boy on the Kentucky and Indiana frontier. Helen Nicolay, who had personal connections to Lincoln's White House, draws an intimate portrait of a child marked by poverty, loss, and an almost desperate thirst for knowledge. We see young Lincoln reading by firelight, walking miles to borrow books, enduring the death of his mother Nancy, and struggling against the crushing limits of frontier poverty. The book traces his journey from log cabin to self-educated lawyer, showing how the humiliations and hardships of his boyhood forged the character that would one day lead a nation through civil war. Written for young readers but rich with detail, this is the story of how one boy transformed adversity into ambition - and why that transformation still matters.
