The Boys in White: The Experience of a Hospital Agent in and Around Washington

In the winter of 1862, Julia S. Wheelock traveled to Washington to tend her wounded brother, a young soldier whose death would transform her from grieving sister to one of the Civil War's most devoted hospital agents. What begins as a daughter's desperate vigil becomes something far larger: a firsthand account of the inferno behind the capital's doors, where thousands of boys in blue lay dying in makeshift wards, tended by women who worked until they collapsed. Wheelock writes with the raw precision of someone who has seen too much and cannot look away. She describes the sound of amputations echoing through corridors, the faces of boys asking for their mothers, and the strange dignity soldiers maintained even in their final hours. This is not history written from a desk; it is memory inscribed in grief, a woman's testimony to the human cost of a nation tearing itself apart.
