The Book of the Homeless (le Livre Des Sans-Foyer)

Published in 1916 as a humanitarian endeavor during the First World War, this anthology emerged from the catastrophe that befell Belgium when German forces swept through the nation in 1914. What began as a refugee crisis became a literary movement, as writers and artists contributed prose and verse to give voice to the voiceless. The collection documents the harrowing exodus of Belgian civilians, particularly children, torn from their homes and families, while also celebrating the resilience that persists even in the darkest circumstances. These contributions are not merely historical records; they are pleas for understanding and action, crafted by artists who believed literature could serve as both comfort and call to arms. The work stands as a testament to how the creative community responded to unprecedented human suffering, using their craft to raise awareness and desperately needed funds for those who had lost everything. Though the war it documents has long ended, the themes of displacement, loss, and the struggle to maintain dignity in the face of devastation remain achingly relevant.
