The Bloody Theatre, or Martyrs Mirror of the Defenseless Christians

First published in Holland in 1660, this monumental martyrology collects centuries of testimony from men, women, and children who chose imprisonment, torture, and death over renouncing their faith. Van Braght, an Anabaptist, gathered accounts spanning from the apostles through 1660, documenting not just the facts of their martyrdoms but the final words, prayers, and songs of the condemned. The result is over a thousand pages of devastating intimacy: ordinary people explaining why they could not bear arms, could not swear oaths, could not bow to earthly powers that contradicted their conscience. The book became the spiritual cornerstone for Anabaptist communities worldwide, including the Amish and Mennonites who trace their lineage to these 'defenseless Christians.' Reading it today offers something rare: direct access to a tradition of radical pacifism forged in blood, and to the quiet, unshakeable courage of those who refused to fight back.
