History - British, History - Modern (1750+), History - Warfare

In April 1918, with German U-boats starving Britain and the Western Front crumbling, a desperate plan took shape: load four old cruisers with concrete, sail them into the fortified Belgian harbor of Zeebrugge, and sink them in the canal mouth to seal off the U-boat base. The odds were infinitesimal. The harbor was protected by minefields, concrete emplacements, and heavy artillery. Yet volunteers came forward to crew the block ships knowing they would likely never return. Alfred Francis Blakeney Carpenter commanded one of those vessels, and his account, written just four years after the raid, captures the operation with the immediacy of someone who lived it: the tense planning, the volunteers who kissed goodbye the photographs of their wives and children, the terrifying approach through the Flemish darkness, and the fury of the German batteries as the ships went in. The raid did not end the war, but it struck a blow at German naval dominance and proved that even in the war's darkest hour, courage could still be summoned. For anyone drawn to the human stories behind military history, this memoir offers an unforgettable window into one of WWI's most audacious gambles.
