The Birth of Yugoslavia, Volume 2

In the chaos following World War I, the remnants of four empires gave rise to one of Europe's most fragile new nations. Baerlein documents the tumultuous birth of Yugoslavia in its earliest, most precarious years when the centuries-old dream of uniting Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes collided with the brutal realities of ethnic resentment, foreign territorial appetites, and the impossible task of forging a unified state from deeply divided peoples. The book captures the immediate post-war period when the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian army removed one obstacle but revealed countless others: Italian and Romanian designs on borderlands, the deep distrust between South Slavic groups, and the absence of any shared institutional framework to hold this ambitious project together. Written in the 1920s as a contemporary account, this volume offers invaluable primary source material for understanding the political fractures that would eventually tear this nation apart. For readers interested in the origins of Balkan conflicts, the collapse of empires, or the tragic gap between nationalist aspiration and political reality.
