The Bible, King James Version, Book 29: Joel

Joel opens with one of the most terrifying visions in scripture: a locust swarm so vast it darkens the sky, consuming every green thing in its path. The land lies ruined, the vineyards and fields destroyed. But these locusts are more than insects. They are an army of God, the vanguard of the "day of the Lord," when divine judgment will sweep through the world. The prophet calls the people to weep, to rend their hearts, to return to the one who has wounded them. This is prophecy as visceral horror and holy warning. Joel's language burns with agricultural devastation and apocalyptic fire, yet it pivots unexpectedly toward mercy. The same God who sends the swarm promises to pour out his Spirit. The final chapters hold one of the most intimate promises in all of scripture: "I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh." For readers drawn to the prophetic tradition, Joel offers both terror and tenderness. It endures because it speaks to every generation facing collapse: the locusts always come, but so does the possibility of return.
