The Bible, Douay-Rheims, New Testament

The Douay-Rheims New Testament stands as the foundational English translation for Catholic readers, created in the early 17th century from the Latin Vulgate in response to the religious upheavals of the Reformation. This is the Bible that shaped Catholic English for centuries, bearing a literary character distinctly different from its Protestant counterparts: more formal, more literally tied to the Latin, and preserving renderings that remain deeply familiar to Catholic readers , 'Holy Ghost' instead of 'Holy Spirit,' 'detain' instead of 'withhold.' It contains the four Gospels narrating Christ's life and ministry, the Acts of the Apostles tracing the early Church, the Epistles of Paul and others expounding Christian doctrine and practice, and the apocalyptic vision of Revelation. The language carries a weight and formality that modern translations often smooth away, giving readers access to a texture of sacred text that has formed Catholic imagination for four centuries. Whether approached for devotional reading, literary study, or historical understanding, this translation offers an encounter with scripture shaped by a particular moment in English letters and a particular vision of faithful transmission.
