The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Book 73: Apocalypse: The Challoner Revision

The final book of the New Testament, the Apocalypse (or Book of Revelation) comprises visions granted to John while imprisoned on the island of Patmos around 95 AD. What unfolds is neither straightforward narrative nor simple allegory but something more unsettling: a cascade of symbolic imagery that has haunted Christian imagination for two millennia. The seven letters to the churches of Asia Minor open the text with urgent pastoral counsel before the veil parts to reveal the throne room of heaven, the four horsemen riding forth in sequence, the beast rising from the sea, and the great prostitute Babylon sitting upon scarlet waters. The text builds through judgment toward renewal, culminating in the vision of a new heaven and new earth where God dwells with humanity. This Douay-Rheims translation, revised by Richard Challoner in the 18th century, preserves the muscular English that shaped how generations of English-speaking Christians have encountered these electrifying visions. It remains essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the images that permeate Western art, literature, music, and political rhetoric.
